The thunderbird, or animikii, as it is known in Anishinaabemowin (Ojibwe language) is a powerful winged being that figures significantly in Indigenous communities across North America. Legends and tales of the animikii have been passed down in the oral tradition for generations.

In Native American mythology, a thunderbird presents in the supernatural form of a mighty bird, and lives in the clouds above the highest mountain tops. It has vivid, multi-coloured feathers, with sharp claws and teeth, and is big enough to pluck a whale out of the sea with its talons, like an eagle carries a fish. The flapping of its wings is said to create thunder, and lightening flashes from its eyes. In many stories, the thunderbird is seen as a protector from evil spirits and a life-giver, bringing storms and rain to grow crops. In other legends, the thunderbird comes to punish those of low moral integrity.
For thousands of years up to the present day, the spiritually symbolic Thunderbird has appeared on Indigenous totems and crests, as well as in paintings, carvings, clothing, and jewelry.
Today, it also appears on Laurentian Chief’s fur-trimmed indoor moccasins for men. Beaded by hand, the thunderbird motif has been added to the vamp of these handsome suede slippers in tribute to the animikii of Indigenous mythology.
